BOOM Festival 2012

''Shamanism meets technology, meets social change.''
BOOM FESTIVAL 2006: FULL MOVIE
I'm in Madrid right now anxiously awaiting my 9 AM train departure to the 2012 BOOM Festival in Idanha-A-Nova Lake, Portugal. Well, actually direct bus tickets from Madrid to BOOM have been sold out for about a month, and train tickets from Madrid to Castelo Branco, Portugal (the closest town to BOOM territory) have been sold out for almost two weeks. So I'm taking a train to a town called Caceres in Spain, about 80 KM from Boom Festival in hopes of finding a way to get over to Boom from there. The tribal-tatted train ticket agent assured me flocks of Boomers are doing the same thing, given the inconvenient options. So I'm staying up all night and heading over to the train station as soon as these Madridian Metros start up, again.

Anyway, what is BOOM? Their tagline is that it's ''a playground for a potential future''. Thousands of people from all over the world get together every other year to camp out and trance out for one week in the middle of nature under the August Full Moon. Lunatics, I know. But I love it. I'm really excited about the near limitless amount of workshops taking place this year at BOOM. Below are some of my favorite Boom Festival workshop and event excerpts from their website:
http://boomfestival.org/boom2012/. Check them out.

WORKSHOPS
Workshops at the Healing Area allow us to explore and experience unique and powerful therapies in a safe environment with experienced professionals that contribute to the Boom from a space of love.

There will be daily practices, sound journeys, ceremonies, and a number of different types of bodywork supporting inner growth and transformation. Workshops at the Healing Area embrace a variety of traditions of healing. They demonstrate how we each have our unique way of reach-ing the same destination, of enriching our transformation.

They also represent the distinct approaches of various traditions; including daily groups of dif-ferent styles of centring practices – from Kundalini and Asthtanga, to Hatha yoga and from Aqua Tai Chi to QiGong.
Alchemical journeys are experienced with different types of meditation. We also recall the for-gotten language of the body with cellular consciousness: an ancient Tibetan technique.

In the Healing Area there is the possibility to experience a daily Temazcal, representing the uterus of Mother Earth, which takes us back to the womb as we open ourselves to the process of dying and being reborn.

Seed Wars: Vandana Shiva Versus Monsanto

“If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny.” Thomas Jefferson

With a conventional educational background in nuclear physics and quantum theory, Vandana Shiva has evolved to become a modern day planetary-consciousness activist. Clearly understanding the interconnectedness of the macro-life on the micro-scale and the micro-life on the macro-scale, Dr. Shiva has put her planetary-saving efforts into stopping multi-national corporate monsters such as Coca-Cola when they were attempting to privatize the water-systems in India, (including the water from the sacred River Ganges) and most recently, probably the biggest modern-day monster of them all, Monsanto.

Vandana Shiva recently appeared in an interview with Bill Moyers in order to express the emergency situation our world's agriculture system is in thanks to the monopolistic tendencies of Monsanto. Shiva opens the interview by telling Bill Moyers about a key teaching Krishna gives in the Bhagavad Gita:

You know we have this very beautiful text in India, the [Bhagavad] Gita. And there is a very simple lesson that Krishna gives, that you do not measure the fruit of your action, you have to measure your obligation for action. You have to find out the right thing to do. That is your duty. Whether you win or lose? It's not the issue. The obligation to do the right thing.

Dr. Shiva and Krishna are right. Of course it doesn't matter whether you win or lose. What actually matters is whether or not you bother to do the right thing. And half of the battle is discovering what the right thing to do is. In Vandana Shiva's case, she is actively reclaiming sovereignty over our planet's food supply; which is why she's going after the giant, seed-hoarding monopolists, Monsanto, the biggest GMO seed-producing company in the world. She goes on to say:

Eighty percent of the food of the world is even today produced by small farmers. Our small farmers are feeding 1.2 billion Indians. We forget the scale of what smallness means multiplied many times. Because we've got used to the dinosaur mentality. We only see the big. We forget that dinosaurs go extinct.
