I noticed the peculiar balloon-like sculpture while biking around South Beach during Miami Art Week last year. I knew the overwhelming frenzy of Basel-related activity was going to prevent me from visiting the Orb again, but I made a note of the surreal sculpture. A year later I returned to Art Week and photographing the Orb was at the top of my list.
The Betsy Orb functionally doubles as a projection screen sculpture and a third floor sky bridge that connects the boutique hotel's Dixon and Hohauser wings. This work of public art adds a whimsical bounce in an otherwise drab South Beach alley. During Miami Art Week the Betsy projects works of visual art for visitors and locals to enjoy. Below is a look at some of the visuals projected on the surface of The Orb on the final night of Art Week. This sculpture, which started as an idea, really took an otherwise ordinary alley located in an exuberant corner of the world and made it appropriately extraordinary.
